Youth Financial Literacy
Youth, financial and literacy are three words that don’t often go together. College students have maxed out
their credit cards; teenagers have iPhones and other digital devices. Well-meaning parents think they are doing a
disservice to their children if they say “no.” The college student that has the maxed out credit cards would have
been better served if he or she had been instilled with finanical literary in their youth. Kids would learn that
it’s not that Mom and Dad doesn’t love you, it’s that things cost money. Financially responsible youth will become
financially responsible adults. The US government has a Web site that attempts to educate people about the basics
of money and financial education. For example, under “Manage my credit and Debt” the FDIC has an article geared
towards parents, students and youth. Financial literacy is an important topic to understand as our children become
the next generation of earners.
